Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a letter dated Saturday, July 09, 2005 from Ayman al-Zawahiri to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi which was obtained during counterterrorism operations in Iraq and has been circulating online. Letter provides a comprehensive view of Al-Qaida strategy in Iraq and globally and strategic vision for Al-Qaida direction in Iraq and globally. Letter also portrays Al-Qaida leadership isolation and dependence.
Letter highlights:
1) The centrality of Iraq for the global jihad.
2) War does not end with an American departure.
3) Acknowledgment of the appeal of democracy to the Iraqis.
4) The need to maintain popular support at least until jihadist rule has been established.
5) Admission that more than half the struggle is taking place in the media.
